3D scanning and digitization of a specific example of memorial architecture and 3D printing of a replica

Members of iDEAlab, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Zenica, V.A.Sc. Kenan Varda, Ph.D. Ernad Bešlagić and assistant professor, Ph.D. Josip Kačmarčik took part in the implementation of specific activities at the beginning of September 2021. Namely, at the request of the GS machine factory in Travnik (GS-TMT), 3D scanning and digitization of one of the sculptures in the national monument "Smrika" in Novi Travnik was done, and based on that, reduced models were made by 3D printing. The sculpture has an original height of 2.2 m, while the reduced models are printed at a height of 12.5 cm.

The recording of the sculpture was done using a manual 3D scanner Artec EVA, and the processing of the images and the creation of a 3D STL‑CAD model using the software Artec Studio 15 Professional and Autodesk Meshmixer. Based on the 3D model of the sculpture, 12 reduced replicas were printed using FDM 3D printing technology from PLA material, on three different printers (Ultimaker S5, Ultimaker S3 and Ultimaker 2+).

The National Monument "Smrika" in Novi Travnik is a necropolis for the victims of fascism, erected in 1975 in memory of the 700 victims of the fascist terror of 1941. The monument was constructed according to the project of architect Bogdan Bogdanović, one of the largest regional builders of memorial architecture. Within the monument, twelve sculptures were placed in pairs in two irregular rows. They represent twelve soldiers - guards who are to remain in that place forever, eyes wide open. They are the guardians of the innocent, on watch with the task of preventing suffering. In September 2021, the restoration of this monument carried out by the municipality of Novi Travnik was completed.
